Let's Play Pretend

(Leesha Harvey)

“What a beautiful house,” said the postman

To the lady in the polka dot dress

She flashed a smile and said, “Thank you,

I guess you could say we’ve been blessed.”

She goes back inside to the kitchen

And pulls out her Valium and scotch

Flops down in front of the flat screen

Looking for some soap to watch

Let’s play pretend, let’s play pretend

Lock all the doors, don’t let anyone in

Inside it’s hell but the outside looks trim

It’s easier if we pretend.

“Looks like you’ve got it all,” said the banker

To the man on his right at the bar.

“A good-looking wife, a house and two kids,

And you just bought that fancy new car.”

The man flashed a smile and said, “Thank you.”

As he bought them a couple of beers.

But he failed to mention the waitress,

The one he’s been seeing for years.

Chorus

Never giving an inch, always taking a mile

You can hurt all you want just as long as you’re faking a smile

When the kids came home on the school bus

They weren’t too surprised to find

That Daddy was packing his suitcase

And Mommy was losing her mind

The youngest one spoke like a prophet

As she said, “Would you look at yourselves?

“Do you really think it will be different,  [better?]

Pretending with somebody else?”
